Irish runner Ciara Mageean dies at 34

Irish runner Ciara Mageean, 34, who held national records in the 800 meters, mile, and 1500 meters, passed away on November 1. Her family shared the news via social media, confirming her death.
Mageean had been battling stage 4 bowel cancer since May 2025. The diagnosis came after a standout period in her career. She was a two-time Olympian, competing in the 1500 meters at the 2016 and 2021 Games. An Achilles injury prevented her from racing at the 2024 Olympics.
A Peak Career Cut Short
The timing of her injury was unfortunate. From 2023 to early 2024, Mageean was at the height of her powers. In 2023, she set personal bests in the mile (4:14.58) and 1500 meters (3:55.87). The 1500-meter record came during a victory at the Brussels Diamond League meet.
Her form continued into 2024. In May, she ran 1:58.51 for 800 meters. The following month, she won the 1500 meters at the European Championships. Her final professional race was a Diamond League 2,000 meters in Monaco in July 2024.

A Legacy Beyond the Track
Mageean announced her cancer diagnosis in a July 2025 Instagram post, where only her right arm, connected to a medical tube, was visible. The Olympic rings were tattooed on the inside of her wrist.
In June, she released a book titled My Greatest Race, detailing her cancer diagnosis. The book became an all-Ireland bestseller. Mageean was sponsored by New Balance and was married to Thomas Moran a few weeks before her death.
Tributes and Recent Memories
World record holder Faith Kipyegon called Mageean a lovely person. Síofra Cléirigh Büttner, who also ran for New Balance Boston, had texted Mageean recently to congratulate her on her wedding. They had planned to meet for coffee.
