Korea’s Samsung Biologics is expanding its reach into peptide therapeutics by acquiring PolyPeptide Group AG for CHF 1.46 billion, an all-cash tender offer for 100% of the company.

The deal values each PolyPeptide share at CHF 44.31, bringing the implied equity value to approximately CHF 1.46 billion. This transaction targets the fully diluted share capital of the Swiss-based CDMO.

PolyPeptide Group AG operates as a contract development and manufacturing organization that specializes in peptide-based active pharmaceutical ingredients. The company has over 70 years of API manufacturing heritage and has produced more than 1,000 therapeutic peptides to date.

Facilities span Sweden, Belgium, France, the United States, India, with a corporate office in Switzerland and a separate Innovation Center in Strasbourg, France. These sites handle R&D, development, and commercial manufacturing.

Expanding beyond antibodies and ADCs

By adding this CDMO, Samsung Biologics aims to expand capabilities beyond antibodies and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). Peptide therapeutics represent one of the fastest-growing segments in the biopharmaceutical industry.

This growth is driven by surging global demand for obesity treatments and the continued expansion of peptide-based therapies into new disease areas. Samsung Biologics will leverage PolyPeptide’s specialized expertise to address growing demand for peptide-based therapeutics, particularly in obesity and diabetes, including GLP-1 therapies.

The combined entity will create a differentiated, end-to-end multi-modality CDMO platform. This integration brings together Samsung Biologics’ global manufacturing scale with PolyPeptide’s proven track record and advanced technology platform.

Samsung Biologics serves clients across a broader range of therapeutic modalities by advancing innovation in high-growth areas such as oncology and other emerging indications.

This planned acquisition extends beyond adding capacity; it lays the foundation for Samsung Biologics’ next phase of growth, supported by a strong pipeline of active peptide projects that includes a deep late-stage portfolio.

A strategic move for multi-modality capabilities

While the primary goal is to strengthen the manufacturing infrastructure for peptide drugs, the deal also shifts the competitive setting for large-scale biologic production. The integration of PolyPeptide’s Swedish and French sites adds significant geographic diversity to Samsung Biologics’ global network.

Acquiring a CDMO with established regulatory track records often reduces the time required for new drug candidates to enter clinical trials. By internalizing the specialized technical knowledge required for peptide synthesis, Samsung Biologics can likely reduce reliance on external partners for this specific modality.

This move positions the company to capture a larger share of the market for obesity and diabetes treatments, which has seen rapid expansion in recent years. The focus on oncology and other emerging indications suggests a long-term strategy to diversify revenue streams beyond the current blockbuster antibody market.
