Roberto “Bobby” Claudio received the PRA President’s Award as a Pillar of Philippine Retail Leadership at the 2026 Outstanding Filipino Retailers Awards. He shared the honor with Ma. Alegria “Bing” Limjoco. The award recognizes decades of contributions that shaped the country’s retail sector, from building a major sports retail brand to leading the industry’s largest association through digital and regulatory changes.

From a single toy store to a retail empire

Claudio’s career started in 1978 when he left a multinational job to open a small toy store in Greenhills Shopping Center with his brothers. The shop, named Toby’s Forms and Shapes after his eldest son, soon changed direction. Instead of sticking with an unprofitable concept, Claudio switched to sporting goods, establishing the foundation for Toby’s Sports.

The company now operates as a multi-brand retailer with over 100,000 products from more than 160 brands. Claudio’s impact extended beyond his own business. He was among the founding members of the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA), a role that defined much of his later work.

Leading the industry through collaboration

Elected PRA president for the 2023-2025 term, Claudio guided the association through initiatives on fair competition, intellectual property rights, sustainability, and digital transformation. His efforts included policy support to balance conditions between traditional and online retailers, partnerships with groups like FILSCAP to assist members in the creative sector, and involvement in the United Nations Global Compact.

In 2024, the Philippine Council of Associations and Association Executives named him Outstanding Association Board Member of the Year. When PRA elected new officers for 2025-2027, he became chairman of the board, ensuring continued influence over the industry’s direction.

His leadership style focused on collective action. Retailers now deal with overlapping challenges—e-commerce, regulation, sustainability, and workforce changes—that no single company can address alone. Associations like PRA provide necessary platforms for shared solutions, a principle Claudio reinforced during his time in office.

That combination of business growth and industry support may explain the significance of the 2026 award. Philippine retail has changed dramatically since Claudio opened his first store in the late 1970s. Digital sales, artificial intelligence, and omnichannel strategies have reshaped how people shop. Yet adaptability, customer focus, and reinvention remain key.

For many in the industry, Claudio’s legacy goes beyond stores or policies. It involves the systems he helped establish for others to build on. The PRA President’s Award recognizes not only past achievements but also the foundation for retailers facing a more demanding environment.

As chairman of the PRA board, Claudio continues to guide the association during a period of both disruption and opportunity. His career—from entrepreneur to industry advocate—demonstrates how leadership can evolve while maintaining focus on the essentials that drive businesses and communities forward.
